"These sketches are not so much about my life as they are about my own country. I hope that it will give you as much pleasure as I have had, in creating these images."
Nelson Mandela | Artist Motivation | 2001
It was 'The Struggle Series’ prints that formed the original base artworks for “The Nelson Mandela Unity Series”. The Unity Series is a collaboration between Nelson Mandela and invited contemporary artists, chosen from around the world. Each artist was given a set of the six prints from the ‘Struggle Series’ whereon they created, in their own style and medium, an interpretation of what Nelson Mandela meant to them. Since Nelson Mandela’s passing, it has fallen on his eldest daughter, Dr. Makaziwe Mandela, to honour her father by presenting this unique collaboration to the world.
In May 2002 Nelson Mandela created a series of sketches that reflected his time on Robben Island. He revisited the island in order to capture, the essence of the island. After which he applied his unique style of bright colours to the series of works.
